Secular Franciscans are called to work together in building up the Church as the sacrament of salvation for all and through their baptism and profession, made “witnesses and instruments of her mission”. Secular Franciscans proclaim Christ by their life and words. Their preferred apostolate is personal witness in the environment in which they live and service for building up the kingdom of God within the situations of this world.
The Secular Franciscan Order(S.F.O.) exists in an organized way in the states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra and where ever the friars are working. The Secular Franciscans in India belong to various classes of people. In some dioceses, a large number of diocesan priests and a few bishops too are members of the S.F.O.
In Mt.Carmel Chapel SFO is active on various levels. the members assemble periodically for common prayers and worship and to reflect on the Word of God. At this meeting they also review the activities under taken by them to improve the living conditions of people around them. These activities take on different forms, depending very much on the prevailing circumstances.
The National Council of the SFO in India, which is governed by its own approved statutes, and which has a strength of about 25 members chosen from various regions of South India, has the duty to guide, animate and coordinate the life and apostolate of all the Secular Franciscan Fraternities in India at the national level.
