The Society of St.Vincent de Paul is an international Voluntary, fraternal and charitable organization of lay people, men and women, catholic in their origin. The Society was founded in 1833 in Paris by Blessed Fredric Ozanam and his companions. The Society is engaged in charitable and humanitarian activities.
The Vocation of the members of the Society known as Vincentians is to serve Christ in the poor and suffering. The Society serves the needy through person-to-person contact irrespective of caste and creed. The conference (basic working unit of the society) in Ponda is known as the conference of “Our Lady of Assumption. This conference was established (aggregated on 19-11-1953 by five founder members, Mrs. Tereza Coelho, Mrs. Inez Almeida, Mrs. Afonsa Luiza Coelho e Rodrigues, Mrs. Ilda Aguiar and Mrs. Julieta Albuquerque e Rodrigues and was called the conference of “Nossa Senhora de Assumpcao.
At present the conference has 15 active members and 17 auxiliary members. The funding for charitable activities comes from secret collection (contribution given by each member during the weekly meetings), donations from auxiliary members and benefactors, collection from Chapel on Maundy Thursday and a monthly door collection is taken on the second Sunday and through fund raising if need arises.
At present there are 16 adopted families who are given assistance in cash and kind for their medical, educational and other needs. For the year 2013-14, the assistance given by the conference was Rs.1,52,340/-. Besides this Christmas gifts were given at Christmas time in the form of cash and food items. The members visit the adopted families regularly at their homes. Besides this, the members visit the sick in hospitals and homes. Every year visits to an orphanage and an old age home are organized. On 27th September the feast of St.Vincent de Paul is celebrated with Eucharistic celebration and a get together for members, auxiliary members, benefactors and beneficiaries. The members attend weekly meetings held on every Monday at 5.30 p.m. at Mount Carmel Chapel premises, except in the month of May.
